Subscription Box Insanity: Glossybox (Sep. ’14)

Glossybox is here.

Glossybox is here.

First look

Harper’s Bazaar guest curator box

Groupon recently ran a promotion where you could get a discount off of one of their longer subscriptions. I didn’t have a true beauty box in my subscription line-up and this seemed like a good deal to give one a try, so I jumped on it.

I opted for the three-month plan and received a discount of $15, for a total purchase of $45. I am hoping that I can find some new brands to try out, or get some duplicates of items I am already using.

I was able to place my order in time to get the September Glossybox which happened to be co-curated by Harper’s Bazaar, a popular fashion magazine. I actually hadn’t realized that when I ordered, so I’m pretty excited by what I may find in this box!

THE DETAILS: Glossybox costs $21 a month, including shipping, with discounts for 3, 6, and 12 month plans. This box only ships to the 48 continental U.S. states and is non-refundable. I’ve been reading about the items that come in these boxes and they tend to be either deluxe samples or full-size.

First look

First look

Here’s the first look. There are indeed a couple of full-size items and a few deluxe samples. I recognize some of the brands and there are items that are already intriguing me (not sure if that’s in a good or bad way yet) so I can’t wait to dive in. The packaging is nice as well but I’ve actually seen a lot of great packaging from boxes like French Box and Birchbox so I guess I’m becoming a bit harder to impress.

UPDATE: I received an email from Glossybox letting me know that I was one of the customers who received a box that didn’t include a special gift. Because of that error, they opted to send out an entire new September box! I’ve posted the items I received in that box, but here is the gift that was left out as well:

BB Bronzing Cream

BB Bronzing Cream

FREE BOX: This BB cream by Boscia is also a bronzer with an SPF; it was the item left out of my previous box. Since it has a silicone in it that I am allergic, I’m a little bummed as it is also a full size product. I found it for a price of $17.49.

Lip Tar

Lip Tar

The first item I grabbed (because really, is it mascara, liner, what?) turns out to be one of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC)’s Lip Tars…in Black Dahlia. It is full-size, comes with it’s own lip brush, and looks black. Wow! I went online and found out that it is actually “blackest, blackened red”. Well for the girl who has everything, this is something I don’t have so it’s a keeper! The retail value for this item is $18.

Lip Tar: Metallic

Lip Tar: Metallic

FREE BOX: In the free box I received this Lip Tar in Authentic, which OCC says is a bronze copper frost.

Mascara deluxe sample

Mascara deluxe sample

The next item is this deluxe sample of Benefit’s They’re Real! mascara; the full-size retails for $23. I’ve read good things online about this product on Sephora but I also already have a ton of full and sample-size mascara that I don’t use too often. Still, great to get a popular, respected brand. I’d estimate retail value as about $1.

FREE BOX: In the free box, I received a duplicate of this item.

This Vichy Laboratories Liftactiv Night cream is targeted at anti-wrinkle and firming needs. It is another deluxe sample, with a full-size version retailing for $43.70. It is paraben-free but when I checked out the ingredient list, I noticed that it contained a form of silicone (dimethicone). I have an allergy to silicones (actually a lot of people do) so I put this in the swap pile. I estimate the retail value of this as $13.18.

FREE BOX: In the free box, I received a duplicate of this item.

I liked the bright, true red of this Essie nail polish in She’s Pampered. I found it online for $8.47. The color is beautiful so I’m sad that I already have several shades of red polish; it’s pretty enough though that I know I’ll be able to swap or gift it. A great item to include in the box!

Madison Ave Hue

Madison Ave Hue

FREE BOX: In the free box, I received this in a bright pink called Madison Ave Hue and it is retailing for $5.99.

Travel conditioner

Last but not least is another deluxe sample. This one is a perfumed conditioner by Bulgari in the scent “Au The Vert”. A full-size version retails for $45. The size of this item isn’t marked so I’m going to estimate retail value as about a third of this- i.e. $15. My personal preference is not to use lotions or other skin/haircare products with an actual perfume because it always seems like the amount of it is too strong and causes some kind of reaction or just gives me a headache. So I’m not super excited about this item and the actual scent is only so-so for me.

The Blanc version

The Blanc version

FREE BOX: In the free box, I received this same perfumed conditioner but in the scent of “The Blanc”.

Ok, that makes the grand total of this box an approximate $55.65. Since I paid about $15 per box, that means I more than tripled my initial investment! Not too bad and I got some of those new products I was hoping for. Now, I have read reviews online from other subscribers who note that often when these boxes offer mass discounts like those found on Groupon, the value takes a dive. I’m hoping that’s not the case but I guess I have two more boxes to find out!

UPDATED Total Value: Including all the items in the second box, I know have an estimated retail value of $126.31 for the month of September. I definitely will have quite a few new products to try, swap or gift. And the holidays are coming up fast!
