Subscription Box Insanity: Little Lace Box (Dec. ’14)

Little Lace Box

Little Lace Box

I’m very excited about a new(ish) subscription called Little Lace Box. Their motto is a box that is “for women who know they’re worth it”. A very tall order!

I missed out on LLB’s September box, which included some beautiful home items that I totally lusted after. I couldn’t purchase the box after the fact but was able to sign up for October’s box which promised to get a girl party ready, and November’s box, which was based on the holiday poem, “The Night Before Christmas”  (actual title “A Visit from St. Nicholas“). The latter, I particularly loved and felt like the LLB ladies had really outdone themselves.

So when I received notice that December’s box would have the theme “A Fresh New Start”, I thought how great it would be to send this  December box to my mom as a bit of a pick-me-up.

Recently, mom’s been going through a bit of a tough time. She has worked really hard all her life. I mean REALLY hard…she picked cotton in the fields at the age of two. Fresh out of high school, she joined the Marine Corps and served her country. She worked in factories after she got out and eventually earned her electrician’s certification. I would love to say that after all that, she is now getting to relax as a retiree as she deserves…but life happens sometimes. So it’s a tough time for her right now and I knew when I saw this box that it would be just the thing to raise her spirits.

However, LLB boxes are so popular that when I went to order, they were all sold out! Having experienced LLB’s wonderful customer service in the past, I wrote them a heartfelt email asking (begging) if there was any possible way I could get this box for my mom, or alternatively, have my own shipped to her instead. They wrote back almost within the day and expressed how sorry they were to hear that mom was experiencing some hardships. They also promised to make a special order happen so that I could get her a box too!

I’m getting a little teary-eyed because when my mom and I spoke after she had received it, she was so excited and pleased by the box! She gushed at how it was such a neat idea and how she loved everything she received. She said that everything was so unique and well put together that she just felt really special and thought of. -smile-

Look people…there are businesses and their bottom line is their bottom line. And then their are companies that truly value the work that they do, and their customers…that, even more profoundly, value people and relationships. Thank you Little Lace Box for being the latter!

Subscription Box Insanity: Holiday Petbox (Dec. ’14)

Happy Holidays from Wednesday!

Happy Holidays from Wednesday!

Happy Paw-lidays!!

Back in October, I reviewed a special, limited edition Petbox that I ordered on it’s own because it supported the movement against domestic violence and abuse. Buy with purpose, my friends!

Petbox also put out a limited edition, holiday box and had a deal where if you gifted it, you got additional points that you could use to add items to the box. So I gifted it to Wednesday and what arrived was a smorgasbord of toys, treats, and pet necessities!

Can’t wait to dig in!

Subscription Box Insanity: Orange Glad (Dec. ’14)

Orange Glad: Simply Sweet

Orange Glad: Simply Sweet

A Pretty Box Tied with a Bow!

A Pretty Box Tied with a Bow!

I’ve had my eye on the Orange Glad subscription service and finally (FINALLY!) I found a deal for it during this year’s Black Friday sales.

I’ve got a hideous sweet tooth which I try not to indulge.  But I’ve decided to make this sweet box work in my favor. I’ve resolved that I will make the sweets that come inside last and try to limit myself to only these sweets during the month, if I can. That seems reasonable, no?

Of course having to wait to write this review also means I won’t be ripping open the package to devour them as soon as they come in…guess that helps too. -grin- Shall we get on to the review?

Subscription Box Insanity: BarkBox vs. Petbox (Dec. ’14)

Happy Holidays from Wednesday!

Happy Holidays from Wednesday!

In case you are tuning in for the first time, let me introduce Wednesday, my slightly spoiled fur-baby who is, in reality, a four-year-old Doberman Pinscher. She is beloved, that’s for sure!

To prove it, I’m putting her two (two?!) subscription boxes- BarkBox and Petbox– head to head to see if a clear winner will emerge. (Though who am I kidding? She will probably continue to get both. -sigh-)

I will actually also be reviewing a special, limited edition Holiday Petbox that I ordered on its own, soon. So stay tuned for some holiday doggy goodness!

On to the show!

Book Review: Ysabel

Ysabel Book Cover

Ysabel Book Cover

So though I haven’t posted a book review in awhile, I’ve actually been reading voraciously! In fact, I can’t seem to check books out fast enough at our local public library. (Or return them…pretty typical of me, actually.)

In any case, one of the books I’ve recently read was Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay. It was published in 2008 by Canadian author Kay, and is one of the 12 books  he has written. As with his other books, it can be described as mixture of history and fantasy. I love history and I also love fantasy/supernatural/sci-fi books so this seemed like a good choice! Continue reading

Subscription Box Insanity: French Box (Dec. ’14)

French Box: First Box!

French Box: First Box!

Today’s review is for a subscription service from French Box . France was my first European adventure, way back when I was a wee teen facing down my first international flight.

When I first read about it, I was so excited to try this box out because it promised to include some very well-known French fashion and make-up brands. Being a tad bit obsessed with all things fashion- and particularly open to that of an international flavor- this seemed like it could be a great subscription. So far I loved the first box, and thought the second one was nice, too. However, I wasn’t as keen on the third so I’m really looking to this fourth one to help me decide if I will keep this box or not.

Subscription Box Insanity: L’OcciBox by L’Occitane (Dec. ’14)

L'OcciBox by L'Occitane

L’OcciBox by L’Occitane

This review is for the L’OcciBox by L’Occitane en Provence. It’s not a true subscription box. More like a limited edition beauty sample box. It was released in December as a sort of holiday deal. You could either purchase a certain dollar amount and get it at the discount, or there was also a code.

I don’t purchase from L’Occitane often, but I- and the people I’ve purchased for- have always liked the products we’ve gotten. So ordering this box seemed like a good opportunity to try out a few of their other items and/or make the most of some high quality samples. I guess others felt the same because it sold out almost immediately.

Let’s get rolling, cheres!

Subscription Box Insanity: New England Sack (Dec. ’14)

New England Sack

New England Sack

Hi Readers! Really excited to bring a review to you today of a new box! Called the New England Sack, they just launched with their inaugural box in November. While I missed that box, I was able to purchase the December box and that’s what I’ll be reviewing today. (See my reviews for other months here.)

I’m a Midwestern transplant to the Mid-Atlantic region, with a long-time fascination of New England. I love the culture and lore, not to mention the beautiful scenery one can find in the coasts and forests (both features of which are somewhat foreign to me having grown up surrounded by flat farmland). So it was a bit of a no-brainer to at least try a box that promised to bring small batch, artisan products from local, New England small business owners. (You know me…I’m a huge fan of supporting entrepreneurs!)

Can’t wait to see what my first box has in store for me!

Recipe: Caramel Apple Cobbler

Baked Caramel Apple Cobbler

Baked Caramel Apple Cobbler

Sometimes I find myself getting antsy because I have a lot of miscellaneous foodstuffs lying around taking up space and, in the case of the fresh items, in danger of spoiling. This is often when a kitchen “creation” emerges in my house. In this case I had several aging apples- one golden and one gala- some of what we call “cajeta” (a thinner type of caramel), various spices, heavy whipping cream, and a tin of ready-to-bake, flaky biscuits. Throw it together and you have a delicious dessert. We thought it tasty enough in our house that we ate it after every dinner until it was gone. Give it a whirl and hope you enjoy! Continue reading

Subscription Box Insanity: Bespoke Post (Dec. ’14)

One man's subscription

One man’s subscription

Oh happy day! My husband’s Bespoke Post has arrived!

Hubby doesn’t take a shine to much…he doesn’t have the shopping bug like me. So of course when he decided that he wanted to sign up for this subscription, I was very supportive.

So far he’s loved the boxes that he’s opted in to. (See reviews for these here.) Being camera shy (as am I), there is his hand with the box. When he saw this picture, he laughed and said that perhaps he (his hand) would be “discovered” because of it and soon he would be traveling around the world as a hand model. As his agent, I’m the best person to contact about booking him. ;o)

Okay, so on to the review of the Highlands box! Continue reading
