Subscription Box Insanity: Golden Tote Mystery Clothing Totes (Jan. ’15)

Mystery Golden Tote: Accessory

Mystery Golden Tote: Clothing

Golden Tote was one of the first subscription services I tried. However, I wasn’t sold on the items I received and the normal tote is an all or nothing kind of deal, so I sent it back.

Fast forward almost a year and I got wind of the Golden Tote Mystery Totes that come out in January. This year they also had accessory totes that went super fast!

Luckily I’m a master planner who rarely misses out on a good deal. I was able to get two Mystery Totes totes (one in Medium and one in Large) and am presenting you with my “haul”.

(See other Golden Tote reviews here.)

Fast forward almost a year and I got wind of the Golden Tote Mystery Totes that come out in January with both styles left from the past year as well as a few unreleased items. This year they also had accessory totes and boy did they go fast!

Luckily I’m a master planner who rarely misses out on a good deal. I was able to get three of these mystery accessory totes and am presenting you with my “haul”.

Subscription Box Insanity: Birchbox Fresh Start (Limited Edition Box ’15)

Birch Box Limited Edition

Birch Box Limited Edition

The box I’m reviewing today is from a company called Birchbox. I was actually turned on to this subscription because I saw an old advertisement for their Limited Edition Fall Fete offering and just had to have it.

I had their regular subscription for a few months but I’m a bit overwhelmed with beauty products and am really picky, to boot. So I ultimately canceled it. (See my other Birchbox reviews here.)

However, Birchbox recently released a new, limited edition box called “Fresh Start“. This particular limited edition box is still for sale so while you miss out on the surprise factor, if you like what you see, you are assured of getting your money’s worth.  Continue reading

Subscription Box Insanity: Orange Glad (Jan. ’15)

Orange Glad: Simply Sweet

Orange Glad: Simply Sweet

I’ve had my eye on the Orange Glad subscription service and finally (FINALLY!) I found a deal for it during this year’s Black Friday sales.

I’ve got a hideous sweet tooth which I try not to indulge.  But I’ve decided to make this sweet box work in my favor. I’ve resolved that I will make the sweets that come inside last and try to limit myself to only these sweets during the month, if I can. That seems reasonable, no?

Of course having to wait to write this review also means I won’t be ripping open the package to devour them as soon as they come in…guess that helps too. -grin- (See my other reviews for Orange Glad here.)

Subscription Box Insanity: Julep Woke Up Like This Mystery Box (Jan. ’15)

Julep Maven box

Julep Maven box

I had been getting notices for awhile for the Julep Maven box. Though I’m not a nail polish fanatic, I finally decided to bite.

Julep has their own product line which includes skincare and other items, with the main focus being the polish. After receiving my first box, I later found out that Julep will often put out special edition “mystery” boxes. This review is for one of those. (See my other Julep reviews here.)

Let’s get this show on the road!

Subscription Box Insanity: Fabletics (Jan. ’15)

Fabletics

Fabletics

I’ve been curious to try Kate Hudson’s Fabletics subscription- a subscription for athletic clothing and accessories- for awhile now. Given that I’ve made a renewed commitment to health and activity, it seemed like an auspicious time to try it out.

Can’t wait to see how these stack up to some of the items I’ve been able to get at other athletic clothing brands I shop (Lululemon and Athleta). Also can’t wait to see if some new gear will help inspire me to push forward in the days and weeks ahead! (See my other Fabletics reviews here.)

Subscription Box Insanity: New England Sack (Jan. ’15)

New England Sack

New England Sack

Hi Readers! Really excited to bring a review to you today of a new box! Called the New England Sack, they just launched with their inaugural box in November. While I missed that box, I was able to purchase the December box and several months thereafter. (See my reviews for other months here.)

I’m a Midwestern transplant to the Mid-Atlantic region, with a long-time fascination of New England. I love the culture and lore, not to mention the beautiful scenery one can find in the coasts and forests (both features of which are somewhat foreign to me having grown up surrounded by flat farmland). So it was a bit of a no-brainer to at least try a box that promised to bring small batch, artisan products from local, New England small business owners.

You know me…I’m a huge fan of supporting entrepreneurs!

Subscription Box Insanity: Haute Box (Jan. ’15)

Haute Box is here!

Haute Box is here!

One of the habits I’ve been trying to cultivate is that of putting more effort into connecting with loved ones and showing them in big ways and small that I’m thinking of them and care. So when I saw a free shipping discount for an artisan card subscription, I decided that this might be the incentive I needed to make some good on that thought!

Today’s review is for a boutique card subscription called Haute Box by Haute Papier. Haute Papier is a small business (female-owned!) focused on purveying fine paper goods. According to the website, “each quarter you’ll receive a fabulous box filled with Haute Papier goodies delivered straight to your door!” As I do have a bit of a glut of mass-produced note cards, a box of true stationery goods every quarter sounds like a wonderful bit of luxury to share with my loved ones.

Looking forward to reviewing the first Haute Box of 2015!

Book Review: The Skeleton Road

Skeleton Road: Courtesy of Amazon

Skeleton Road: Courtesy of Amazon

I picked this book up at the library on a whim. It was a murder mystery and I tend to like a good mystery story, in general. As well, based on the jacket blurb, part of the story was set in present-day Oxford- a place I had some great memories from myself- and also during the Balkan war of the 1990s. During that time period, I was aware there was a serious war being waged in that area, but was still young enough not to understand the nuances. So I thought I might gain some insight into this portion of world history as well.

The Skeleton Road was written by Scottish author Val McDermid. McDermid has been very prolific, churning out more than 30 books over the course of her career. This one was her most recent.  Continue reading
